Just as was the case in 2024, The Alpena News readers cast votes for their favorite local businesses and named 99.3 WATZ as the Sunrise Side's Best radio station. The two runner-up finalists are Oldies 105.7 The Bird (WZTK) and 96.7 KLT The Rock Station (WRGZ). All three stations are owned by Midwestern Broadcasting. WATZ and WZTK broadcast and operate fully out of the Alpena area, while KLT operates primarily out of Traverse City, broadcasting on three frequencies across northern Michigan; 97.5 WKLT Traverse City, 93.5 WBCM Boyne City and 96.7 WRGZ Rogers City. It is WRGZ in Rogers City that rocks northeast Michigan.
This is the third year in a row that WATZ has topped The Alpena News Sunrise Side's Best of the Best contest.
Josh Strickland is the Operations Manager of WATZ and WZTK and can be heard weekday afternoons on WATZ from 2 to 7pm.
Josh Strickland picked up an award from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters at its recent GABCON in Atlanta. His award in the Small Market category was for Best Station Produced Commercial. The honor is for a spot he produced while working at First Media Services in Albany.
Strickland has previously won awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) and Associated Press (AP). In 2010, Strickland won the award for Best Morning Show from the MAB for his morning show on 97.5 NOW FM (WJIM-FM in Lansing). In 2002, Strickland co-hosted "Shindig" on Z 92.5 The Castle (WJSZ in Owosso) and won the MAB Merit Award for the program. Strickland also was credited for the production of a Sports Feature aired on The Castle that garnered an AP award that same year.
Strickland is now on the "sunrise side." After two and a half years in South Georgia, Josh Strickland left First Media to join Midwestern Broadcasting back home in Michigan. He'll serve as Operations Manager for Midwestern's Alpena cluster, which includes heritage country station 99.3 WATZ and recently-launched oldies 105.7 "The Bird" WZTK. Midwestern's Traverse City market leader "KLT" also rocks Alpena on 96.7; one of its three frequencies that blanket northern Michigan.
Strickland's first day was November 18th. He was introduced on the air by departing Ops Manager and afternoon personality, Jack O'Malley, who also previously hosted mornings for decades at Midwestern's Traverse City country powerhouse, WTCM. O'Malley will stay on for fill-ins. Strickland will take over O'Malley's afternoon slot on a regular basis beginning Monday, November 25th.
In the transition, Strickland will continue to voice track his midday program on WKAK-FM in Albany, Georgia and will, for a second time, depart Smile FM, where he had been voice tracking the network's night program since March.
Josh Strickland launched the website, DurandNOW.com, to serve Durand, Michigan and the surrounding communities with local news, information and resources on September 1st 2012. The 'hobby' site quickly transformed into a business, and that business evolved into The Durand Now Network, which spawned Corunna Now and Uplift Shiawassee in 2014, The Email Express., The Shiawassee Apple Museum and Perry Pulse in 2015, Owosso Now in 2016, Lansing Integrity in 2017, Shiawassee Radio (podcast) and Shiawassee News (The Shiawassee Exchange) in 2018.
Perry Pulse rebranded as Perry-Laingsburg Pulse in 2019 and in 2020 absorbed Lansing Integrity, to become Perry-Laingsburg Pulse and Integrity. Corunna Now and The Shiawassee Exchange combined for a short time to become Corunna Now and The Shiawassee Exchange.
In 2021, Shiawassee Radio became a streaming station, with an oldies-based format. The new service immediately became a strong contributor to The Durand Now Network bottom line. In 2023, a second streaming station was launched. 989X offers a classic alternative-based format.
In 2023, Corunna Now, Owosso Now and Perry Pulse were 'sunset' and absorbed into Shiawassee Radio. Today, Durand Now continues to serve the broader Southeast Shiawassee-Southwest Genesee region, while Shiawassee Radio serves all of Shiawassee County.
In addition to Durand Now and Shiawassee Radio, 989X, Uplift Shiawassee, The Shiawassee Apple Museum and The Email Express. are all current active brands.
The network's websites faced traffic and revenue setbacks in the years since the onset of COVID-19, but in 2024, in the six months leading up to July, the network had topped total traffic and revenue figures for the full year 2023.
The rebound has begun and there are big plans afoot for 2025.
